Hoyt is not the first manufacturer to use carbon to build a bow Riser. Ten plus years ago PSE built a carbon bow and the original Diamond Archery bows were also carbon risers. The PSE and Diamond bow risers were molded from carbon to look similar to a molded or machined riser, Hoyt has taken an entirely new approach! The Riser on the Carbon Matrix is made of three independent tubes that wrap and mold around each other to form the riser body. A comment we heard when one first appeared in our shop was that it looked "like a roller coaster". Indeed it does look far different then any other bow riser but at the same time graceful and elegant.
Hoyt didn't just make a carbon bow riser to produce a good looking bow, they chose carbon because of several distinct advantages it offers over traditional machined aluminum risers. The first advantage which everyone seems to know of from carbon arrows is carbon makes a lighter riser. The Carbon Matrix bow has a 35 inch axle length and weighs 3.8 lbs, .4 lb less then the Hoyt Maxxis 35, its aluminum riser counterpart.
A second advantage of carbon is that it dampens vibrations much faster then aluminum. This makes for a quiet bow, indeed everyone that has tried the Carbon Matrix in our shop has commented on how quiet it is.
