3/10/09 - The Monster arrived today! This may be the most anticipated Mathews bow ever. It is absolutely different then anything Mathews has ever done. From the pictures it looked very much like a PSE Xforce. When we first took it out of the box the first thing we did was take an Xforce off the shelf and compare the two bows. Both bows are indeed very similar in their layout with short, highly pre-flexed split limbs, radical cams, and similar risers. However, The Mathews Monster is heavier then the Xforce. It also has a much different feel in the hand. The Xforce balances when held loosely, the Monster is top heavy and rolls forward.
Going over the bow everything about the finish, fit, and construction looked first class, just as we have come to expect from Mathews. The limbs have the Monster eyes that Mathews has been showing in their adds, they look quite nice when viewed from the front but the eyes disappear when seen from the side. The yoke cable is not a split yoke but a two part cable, a yoke with two big loops that anchor on each side of the cam to the INSIDE of the limbs and a cable that connects the yoke to the opposite cam.
Enough about the looks, how does it shoot? To answer that question we grabbed the first arrow rest we could, (a whisker biscuit) the nearest arrow, (A Carbon Express Maxima Hunter), our chronograph, and quickly added a string loop. Our test bow was a 29 inch, 70 lb Monster. (6 inch brace height version) The first arrow shot clocked 346 feet per second. So did the second. Only then did we stop to check the bow poundage and weigh the arrow. The bow pulled 68 lbs on our scale and the arrow weighed 335 grains. This is 5 grains lighter then spec but close enough to show that the Mathews Monster is one fast bow!
